Growth Hormone (GH)

Target
GH
Molecular classification
Peptide Hormone, Growth Factor
01

Overview

Growth hormone (GH), also known as somatotropin, is a peptide hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary gland. It plays a crucial role in growth, metabolism, and tissue maintenance. GH stimulates growth of essentially all tissues, especially bone and cartilage, and regulates fat, muscle, tissue, and bone mass throughout life. Many of its effects are mediated indirectly through the stimulation of IGF-1 production. Deficiencies or excesses in GH levels can lead to various disorders, including dwarfism, gigantism, and acromegaly. Synthetic forms of GH are used therapeutically to treat certain deficiencies and disorders.
