Sorbitol Dehydrogenase (SORD)

Target
SORD
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Medium-chain dehydrogenase/reductase
01

Overview

Sorbitol dehydrogenase (SORD) is a cytosolic enzyme that catalyzes the reversible oxidation of sorbitol to fructose using NAD+ as a cofactor. It plays a key role in carbohydrate metabolism, particularly in the polyol pathway. SORD is expressed ubiquitously, with highest concentrations in the liver and seminal vesicles. Clinically, it serves as a diagnostic marker for liver injury. In tissues with low expression, sorbitol accumulation can lead to diabetic complications. SORD is a therapeutic target for ischemia/reperfusion-induced liver injury and diabetic complications.
