Target intelligence / Profile preview
Sorbitol dehydrogenase pseudogene (ENSG00000270425; LOC100419644) is a genomic DNA sequence resembling the functional sorbitol dehydrogenase gene but does not encode an active protein product. Pseudogenes arise by duplication or retrotransposition and typically lack regulatory elements or functional open reading frames, rendering them transcriptionally inactive or non-functional at the protein level. Although the active sorbitol dehydrogenase gene (SORD) plays a central role in the polyol pathway, this pseudogene does not participate in enzymatic activities and is not considered a therapeutic target. This entity is not considered a therapeutic target, druggable protein, or biomarker. There is nothing misspelled, but this gene should not be treated as a functional molecular target. If the intent was to refer to the active SORD gene, a different identifier (such as ENSG00000128052 for SORD) should be used. Related, the SORD gene (not the pseudogene) is an enzyme (oxidoreductase) with roles in glucose metabolism and the development of diabetic complications, but none of these properties apply to this pseudogene.
