SOX1 overlapping transcript (SOX1-OT) is a long non-coding RNA gene found at the SOX1 locus on human chromosome 13. It was identified through transcriptomic studies as being highly expressed in differentiating neural stem cells and certain cancer cell lines, where its expression correlates with that of the SOX1 gene. SOX1-OT has a complex structure, with alternative splicing variants and multiple transcription start sites, and exhibits conserved regions between human and mouse. While its exact function is still unknown, similarities with SOX2-OT and research into lncRNAs suggest it may regulate SOX1 transcription and play a role in neural differentiation and potentially cancer biology. SOX1-OT is not currently a therapeutic target, and neither drugs nor biomarkers are defined for clinical purposes. Further research is needed to clarify its molecular mechanisms and any roles in disease.
