Overview

SOX5 antisense RNA 1 (SOX5-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed from the locus antisense to the SOX5 gene. Like other antisense RNAs, SOX5-AS1 is presumed to regulate the expression of its sense counterpart (SOX5) and potentially other loci via mechanisms such as transcriptional interference, chromatin modification, and RNA-RNA interactions. Antisense lncRNAs often function in *cis* at their site of synthesis to modulate gene transcription, commonly affecting chromatin structure, transcription elongation, or promoter accessibility[2]. Although SOX5 protein itself plays significant roles in cancer biology as an oncogenic transcription factor, the specific role of SOX5-AS1 is less well characterized in the literature currently available. However, based on the biological paradigms of antisense lncRNAs, SOX5-AS1 likely participates in regulation of SOX5 gene expression and could thereby indirectly contribute to pathological processes such as tumor progression if aberrantly regulated[2]. There is no current evidence available indicating that SOX5-AS1 is a direct therapeutic target, biomarker, or drug-interacting molecule.
