Soybean oil is a vegetable oil extracted from the seeds of the soybean (Glycine max) and is primarily composed of triglycerides containing linoleic, oleic, palmitic, and alpha-linolenic acids (PubChem CID 61496). It is not a therapeutic target like a receptor or enzyme; instead, it serves as a nutritional source and a pharmaceutical excipient (DrugBank DB09417). In clinical settings, it is a fundamental component of intravenous lipid emulsions, such as Intralipid, used to provide essential fatty acids and calories to patients requiring parenteral nutrition (StatPearls, Parenteral Nutrition). It also acts as a lipid vehicle for the administration of poorly water-soluble drugs, most notably propofol (FDA Label, Diprivan). While essential for preventing fatty acid deficiency, its high omega-6 content has been associated with potential pro-inflammatory responses in certain patient populations (PubMed, PMID: 23075575). Monitoring of serum triglycerides is essential during administration to avoid complications such as fat overload syndrome (NIH, LiverTox).
