SALL4P5 is a noncoding pseudogene transcript homologous to the protein-coding SALL4 gene. Unlike most pseudogenes considered nonfunctional, SALL4P5 regulates SALL4, an established oncogene in hepatocellular carcinoma, by interacting with the DNA methyltransferase DNMT1—resulting in locus-specific demethylation and activation of SALL4 transcription. SALL4P5 upregulation occurs in hepatitis B virus–related HCC before SALL4 induction, suggesting a role in early cancer development. Its biological activity is epigenetic, with primary nuclear localization, and it has demonstrated effects on cellular proliferation and migration via SALL4 regulation, but is not a direct pharmacological target as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter[1][3].
