Specific beneficial gut bacteria, collectively known as the commensal microbiota, are integral components of the human gastrointestinal tract that maintain host health through metabolic and immunological contributions (NIH: PMC3983973). These microorganisms facilitate the digestion of complex carbohydrates into short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), such as butyrate, which serve as energy sources for colonocytes and exert anti-inflammatory effects (Nature: s41579-020-0433-9). They also provide a competitive barrier against pathogenic colonization and are essential for the proper development of the host's mucosal immune system. In clinical contexts, the depletion or imbalance of these bacteria—known as dysbiosis—is a hallmark of conditions like Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and various metabolic syndromes (PubMed: 32398771). Therapeutic interventions, including Live Biotherapeutic Products (LBPs) and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), aim to restore these populations to achieve therapeutic outcomes (FDA: 82121). Consequently, these bacteria are increasingly viewed as modifiable therapeutic targets for a wide range of systemic and localized diseases.
