Specifically androgen-regulated gene protein (SARG), encoded by the C1orf116 gene on chromosome 1q32.2, is a cytoplasmic protein composed of 601 amino acids. Its expression is highly enriched in prostate tissue and is upregulated by androgens, but not glucocorticoids. SARG has splice variants resulting from alternative polyadenylation and exon usage. It has a putative role as an androgen-specific receptor, with evidence for androgen response elements in its regulatory region. Despite this, little is known about its biochemical function, disease relevance, or therapeutic potential. It has not been established as a confirmed therapeutic target, and no drugs or biomarker applications have been reported. SARG has orthologs in mouse and rat, but detailed functional studies are lacking.
