Overview

Spectrin beta chain, non-erythrocytic 1 (SPTBN1, also known as beta-II spectrin) is an actin crosslinking and molecular scaffold protein that links the plasma membrane to the actin cytoskeleton, contributing to the determination of cell shape, the arrangement of transmembrane proteins, and the organization of organelles. SPTBN1 is part of the spectrin family, characterized by modular domains including actin-binding domains, spectrin repeats, and other motifs that allow it to mediate protein-protein interactions. It is predominantly expressed in all nucleated cells and plays a crucial role in neuronal and cardiac architecture, cell cycle regulation, and apoptosis. Dysfunction or deficiency in SPTBN1 has been associated with a spectrum of developmental and neurological disorders, but it is not considered a direct therapeutic target such as a receptor or enzyme[1][2][3][4][6].
