SPEN antisense RNA 1 (SPEN-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA transcribed from the antisense strand of the SPEN gene locus. Most research and discussion surrounding the SPEN locus focus on the protein-coding SPEN gene and the SPEN protein rather than its antisense RNA transcript. If "SPEN-AS1" was intended to refer to the protein-coding gene or protein (known as SPEN, SHARP, or MINT), please clarify, as the protein has established biological significance and disease relevance[1][2][3]. Note: If your intent was the protein (SHARP/SPEN), it would be classified as a transcriptional corepressor with major functions in gene silencing, nuclear receptor regulation, and Xist-mediated X chromosome inactivation, and is implicated in cancer and developmental biology[1][2][3].
