Overview

Sperm acrosome associated 7 (SPACA7) is a novel, testis-specific protein that localizes to the acrosome of elongating spermatids and mature spermatozoa[1]. It lacks homology to any known protein family and is conserved in mammals like mice and humans[1]. Expression of SPACA7 begins in mid-late spermatocyte stages, increases in round spermatids, and remains high through the maturation of sperm[1]. It is retained within the acrosome and is released during the acrosome reaction, a process essential for fertilization[1]. Functional studies using antibodies demonstrate that SPACA7 promotes dispersal of cumulus cells surrounding the egg and assists in fertilization, although the precise molecular mechanism remains unknown[1]. There are currently no drugs or known inhibitors targeting SPACA7, and no established disease associations or safety concerns related to therapeutic interventions[1].\nSPACA7 is not considered a traditional therapeutic target (such as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or ion channel), but is a specific component of sperm implicated in fertilization processes[1].
