Overview

Sperm acrosome-associated protein 5 (SPACA5), also known as LYZL5 and several other aliases, is a protein predominantly expressed in sperm, with predicted lysozyme enzymatic activity[1][7][8]. It hydrolyzes (1→4)-β-linkages between N-acetylmuramic acid and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, typical for lysozyme-related proteins[8][7]. SPACA5 is implicated in the fusion of the sperm plasma membrane with the egg during single fertilization events, likely serving process-specific functions in the acrosome vesicle and sperm flagellum[1][4][5]. It is not currently considered a direct pharmacological target and has no reported drug interactions, biomarker roles, or safety concerns. The gene for SPACA5 is active primarily in testicular tissue and related reproductive structures[6].
