Overview
Sperm-associated antigen 11B (SPAG11B) is a secreted, androgen-dependent protein specifically expressed in the human epididymis. Its principal functions are believed to involve sperm maturation, storage, and protection during transit through the male reproductive tract. Several isoforms exist due to alternative splicing. Some isoforms share sequence similarity with beta-defensins, implicating a role in antimicrobial defense. Although suggested in gene-disease association studies, SPAG11B is not known to be a direct therapeutic target or established disease biomarker.
