Overview

The sperm cell is a highly specialized, motile male gamete designed for the fertilization of the egg. It consists of a head (containing a haploid nucleus and an acrosome with hydrolytic enzymes for penetrating the egg), a midpiece rich in mitochondria for ATP generation, and a flagellum for locomotion[5][6]. Sperm cells undergo several maturational processes, including chromatin condensation and development of motility, to become capable of fertilization[1][2][3][7]. Sperm function is tightly regulated by molecular features such as membrane ion channels (e.g., CatSper), protein modifications, and environmental cues in the reproductive tract[3][4]. Aberrations in sperm development, structure, function, or molecular components are major causes of male infertility[7].
