Sperm cell function encompasses the coordinated activities that spermatozoa perform to achieve fertilization. These include motility (swimming toward the egg), recognition and binding to the egg’s zona pellucida, the acrosome reaction (release of enzymes to penetrate the egg’s protective layers), fusion with the oocyte, and delivery of the paternal haploid genome and centrioles. Sperm function depends on complex molecular mechanisms involving cAMP signaling, protein kinases, ion channels (CatSper), and the organization of distinct subcellular compartments (head, midpiece, tail). Defects in any of these processes can result in male infertility. Although molecular players within sperm (e.g., specific channels, enzymes) are therapeutic or diagnostic targets, “sperm cell function” is not a discrete molecule or protein and thus cannot be directly classified as a standard biomedical target.
