Sperm flagellar protein 1 (SPEF1) is a microtubule-associated and actin-binding protein that promotes the stabilization and bundling of microtubules, especially along the axis of migrating cells, and is essential for the formation and function of ciliary central apparatus. It contributes to cell migration via filopodium and lamellipodium assembly, regulates planar cell polarity, and is critical for ciliary localization of key proteins such as HYDIN and SPAG6. Mutations in SPEF1 have been associated with ciliary motility defects, such as primary ciliary dyskinesia, but it is not currently considered a direct therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor in pharmacology
