Overview

Sperm microtubule associated protein 2 (SPMAP2) is a testis-specific, microtubule-associated protein encoded by the SPMAP2 gene (HGNC:13706), expressed primarily in the nuclei of haploid male germ cells, particularly during spermatogenesis[1][4][7][8]. Its biological role appears to involve protein assembly, possibly through interactions with T-complex protein 1 subunit epsilon and other components integral to sperm formation and maturation[4]. Alternative splicing results in multiple isoforms, and the gene is evolutionarily conserved in mammals, but is not widely expressed outside of male germ cells[3][4][7]. Although sometimes classified among "cancer/testis antigens" due to its restricted expression, there are currently no known drugs, diagnostic biomarkers, or recognized safety issues directly linked to this protein, and no evidence supporting its direct involvement in common disease processes other than marginal literature mentions in axonal neuropathies[4].
