Overview

Sperm microtubule inner protein 10 (SPMIP10) is a cytoskeletal-associated protein predominantly found in the microtubule doublets of sperm flagella, where it serves as part of the microtubule inner proteins (MIPs) crucial for the structural integrity and function of the axoneme[1][4][5]. SPMIP10 is essential for maintaining proper sperm motility, presumably by reinforcing and stabilizing the microtubule structure within the flagella[5]. The gene is highly expressed in testis and to a much lower extent in other tissues[2]. Mice lacking SPMIP10 exhibit reduced sperm motility while maintaining normal fertility[3]. While it is not classified as a receptor, enzyme, or classic drug target, its dysfunction may be associated with male infertility related to defects in sperm motility[1][3][5].

Biological functions

Stabilization of microtubule structure in sperm flagellaRegulation of sperm motilityContributes to the architecture of axonemal doublet microtubules
03

Disease associations

Potential role in infertility, especially asthenospermia (decreased sperm motility)
04

Safety considerations

No prominent therapeutic safety concerns reported; functional deficiency is associated primarily with reduced sperm motility
