Overview

Sperm microtubule inner protein 6 (SPMIP6) is a protein encoded by the SPMIP6 gene in humans. It is a structural protein that is nuclear- or perinuclear-localized, with no predicted functional domains or significant similarity to other known protein families[5][9]. SPMIP6 is expressed during the differentiation of bronchial epithelial cells and in spermatids, suggesting roles in both ciliogenesis and spermatogenesis[5]. Its proposed functions include participation in the intramanchette transport system (a microtubule-based structure important for sperm tail assembly) and midpiece formation of the sperm flagellum[11][3]. The gene may also be involved in somatic cell proliferation[11]. There is no direct evidence supporting its utility as a therapeutic target, nor are any drugs known to interact with it or exploit related mechanisms of action. The protein has multiple alternatively spliced isoforms and is not associated with prominent disease roles or known safety issues in current literature[5].
