Sperm protein associated with the nucleus on the X chromosome N3 (SPANXN3)

Overview

SPANXN3 is a testis-expressed protein and member of the SPANX-N subfamily on the X chromosome. It shows restricted expression mainly in post-meiotic spermatids, the acrosome region of sperm, and at low levels in selected cancers such as melanoma. It is part of the broader SPANX family of cancer/testis antigens that can be aberrantly expressed in tumors and considered for immunotherapy strategies. The protein is small, contains conserved functional motifs, and possibly has a role in nuclear organization and chromatin structure in sperm, with potential functional diversification in cancers. There are no reported drugs targeting SPANXN3 directly, and its biomarker or safety profile is uncertain due to limited clinical studies.
