Overview

Sperm-tail PG-rich repeat-containing protein 1 (STPG1) is a protein believed to positively contribute to the induction of apoptosis, particularly in response to DNA alkylation damage such as that caused by O(6)-methylguanine. The protein is predicted to be located in mitochondria and the nucleus and plays a role in regulating mitochondrial membrane permeability during apoptosis. Research indicates that STPG1 expression is regulated by the transcription factor ThPOK in gastric cancer, and low levels of STPG1 are correlated with poor prognosis. Overexpression of STPG1 suppresses gastric cancer cell viability and mediates antitumoral immune responses through inhibition of the ERK signaling pathway. Despite these findings, STPG1 is not currently characterized as a classic therapeutic target (such as receptor, enzyme, transporter, or channel), and there are no known drugs that act directly on this protein.
