Overview

Spermatogenesis and centriole-associated protein 1 (SPATC1), also known as speriolin, is a centrosome-associated protein specifically expressed in spermatogenic cells[1][2][3]. It enables gamma-tubulin binding activity and localizes to the centrosome, where it is implicated in organizing and stabilizing centrosome structure during spermatogenesis, particularly in round spermatids and mature sperm[1][2][3]. SPATC1 interacts with the mitotic regulator Cdc20 and is thought to contribute to the faithful inheritance and assembly of centrioles during spermatogenesis and potentially during early zygote development[1][2]. Current evidence suggests SPATC1 plays a specialized role in male germ cell development but it is not a known therapeutic target and there is no evidence for its involvement as a biomarker, drug target, or in disease pathogenesis, although disruption could hypothetically impact male fertility[1][2][3].
