Overview

Spermatogenesis-associated protein 1 (SPATA1) is a protein highly expressed in the testis and involved in the process of spermatogenesis and spermiogenesis, particularly during acrosome development in male germ cells. It is most abundant in developing germ cells (spermatids) and localizes to the acrosomal region. SPATA1 is a binding partner of intraflagellar transport protein 20 (IFT20), possibly providing a docking site for the IFT20 complex at the acrosome area. The protein is also expressed at lower levels in other tissues such as kidney, heart, brain, and lung. Although its role is specific to germ cell development and acrosome formation, there is currently no evidence demonstrating its direct therapeutic targeting or association with major diseases, but it may serve as a marker for male fertility assessment[1][2][3].
