Overview

Spermatogenesis-associated protein 17 (SPATA17) is a protein primarily expressed in the testis and is predicted to be involved in the establishment of meiotic spindle localization, mitotic cell cycle, and spindle organization. It is thought to play a critical role in human spermatogenesis, particularly during meiosis, through functions such as calmodulin binding. There are no established drugs that target SPATA17, and it is not currently considered a classic therapeutic target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter. There is some evidence for association with biliary cirrhosis and possible male infertility, but no well-established role as a disease biomarker or safety concern in therapeutic development.
