Overview

Spermatogenesis-associated protein 31D1 is a member of the SPATA31 gene family, which is predicted to play a role in spermatogenesis and may be involved in cell differentiation[1]. Its molecular classification is not fully defined, but it is not a receptor, enzyme, transporter, ion channel, or established transcription factor; some data suggest it may act as a transcription cofactor and participate in protein-protein interactions[2]. The gene is primarily expressed in testis and spermatozoa and is enriched in reproductive tissues[9]. Some studies report expression in human cancers, but there is no direct evidence for a role in disease progression or as a therapeutic target[4]. There are no known drugs targeting this protein, nor is there evidence of a defined mechanism of action for pharmacological modulation.

Biomarkers

Expression in dense spermatozoa: SPATA31D1 mRNA is higher in more dense, and presumably more fertile, sperm populations in stallions, suggesting possible utility as a biomarker for sperm quality in veterinary androgy
