Spermatogenesis-associated protein 8 (SPATA8)

Target
SPATA8
Molecular classification
Other (testis-specific protein family), Part of the “SPATA” family (Spermatogenesis Associated proteins)
01

Overview

Spermatogenesis-associated protein 8 (SPATA8) is a member of the SPATA (spermatogenesis-associated) gene family encoding testis-specific proteins that play essential roles in the regulation of spermatogenesis, sperm maturation, and male fertility[3]. SPATA8 is critical for the proper differentiation of germ cells and normal sperm development. Human studies show that altered methylation of this gene is correlated with male infertility, specifically with cases of oligozoospermia. There is currently no evidence that SPATA8 is a conventional therapeutic target, nor are there drugs known to modulate its activity. The main clinical relevance of SPATA8 relates to its potential use as a biomarker for diagnosing certain types of male infertility[3].

Mechanism of action

Not applicable. No drugs are known to target this molecule, so no known mechanisms of drug action apply.

03

Biological functions

Spermatogenesis (critical for germ cell differentiation, sperm maturation, and male fertility)Sperm maturation
04

Disease associations

Other (mainly male infertility—altered methylation and/or expression correlates with oligozoospermia and impaired fertility)
05

Safety considerations

Not applicable. There are no therapeutic interventions targeting SPATA8, so drug-specific safety concerns do not apply. The main clinical relevance is with respect to diagnostic use or disease association (infertility) rather than pharmacological modulation
06

Biomarkers

Altered methylation status of SPATA8 (usually alongside other SPATA family genes) may serve as a potential biomarker for certain forms of male infertility, particularly oligozoospermiaElevated or aberrant promoter methylation correlates with poor sperm quality in patients
