Overview

Spermatogenesis associated serine-rich 2-like protein (SPATS2L) is an RNA-binding protein encoded by the SPATS2L gene in humans. It localizes primarily in the cytosol, nucleolus, and nucleoplasm and is involved in the regulation of type I interferon (IFN) signaling as a positive feedback modulator of the JAK/STAT pathway. SPATS2L is upregulated following IFN stimulation and its expression level correlates with disease activity in conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus, likely contributing to the pathogenesis through amplification of interferon-stimulated gene expression. SPATS2L also plays a role in cell cycle and proliferation processes. While directly targeting SPATS2L is under investigation for diseases like SLE due to its central immunoregulatory role, there are currently no known approved drugs targeting this protein[1][2][4][6].
