Overview

Spermatogenesis-associated serine-rich protein 2 (SPATS2) is a cytoplasmic RNA-binding protein primarily expressed in adult testis and implicated in the regulation of spermatogenesis[2][5][7]. Recently, SPATS2 has been shown to be upregulated in various cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, where it promotes cell proliferation, invasion, metastasis, and is associated with poor prognosis[1][2][3][11]. Functional studies have demonstrated that SPATS2 plays important roles in regulating cell cycle progression, apoptosis, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition in tumor cells. Its gene expression is controlled by diverse epigenetic mechanisms including DNA methylation and m6A methylation[2]. SPATS2 is emerging as both a potential therapeutic target and a prognostic biomarker in tumors, but currently, there are no known approved drugs or targeted therapeutic agents against it[1][2][3].
