Overview

Sphingomyelin phosphodiesterase 4 pseudogene 1 (SMPD4P1) is classified as a pseudogene, which means it is a genomic DNA sequence similar to its parent functional gene but is generally non-functional in terms of protein coding due to disruptive mutations or missing regulatory elements[6]. Specifically, it is related to the family of enzymes known as neutral sphingomyelinases, but SMPD4P1 itself does not encode a functional enzyme. While most pseudogenes do not have direct roles as classical therapeutic targets, some can act as regulators of gene expression, for example by functioning as RNA decoys for microRNAs, antisense regulators, or regulators of mRNA stability[1][6]. There is no evidence that SMPD4P1 itself has any documented biological or disease relevance or that it is druggable. Therefore, it is not considered a therapeutic target or biologically active molecule, and should not be used as such.
