Overview

Sphingomyelin phosphodiesterase 4 pseudogene 2 (SMPD4P2) is a non-functional, duplicated segment of DNA homologous to the sphingomyelin phosphodiesterase 4 (SMPD4, also known as neutral sphingomyelinase-3) gene[1][7]. As a pseudogene, it does not encode a functional protein product, but its RNA transcript may potentially interact with endogenous RNA regulatory networks, such as competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) pathways or RNA interference[4][6][8]. Like many pseudogenes, SMPD4P2 may play a regulatory role in gene expression through these non-coding RNA mechanisms, although there is currently no evidence for direct biological or disease-modifying effects specific to this pseudogene. SMPD4P2 is **not** a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, or structurally active protein, and there are no known drugs, mechanisms of action, or clinical biomarkers associated with it.
