Sphingosine-1-phosphate lyase 1 (SGPL1)

Target
SGPL1
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Lyase, Pyridoxal phosphate-dependent enzyme
01

Overview

SGPL1 is a pyridoxal phosphate-dependent enzyme that catalyzes the irreversible cleavage of sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), a bioactive lipid mediator, into a long-chain fatty aldehyde and phosphoethanolamine. It is the final enzyme in the sphingolipid degradative pathway and serves as the sole exit point for sphingolipid metabolism. SGPL1 plays a crucial role in regulating inflammation, neuronal autophagy, lipid homeostasis, and apoptosis.

Mechanism of action

SGPL1 catalyzes the irreversible cleavage of sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) into a long-chain fatty aldehyde and phosphoethanolamine, thus regulating S1P levels and influencing downstream signaling pathways.
