Sphingosine kinase 2 (SK2) is an enzyme that catalyzes the phosphorylation of sphingosine to produce sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P), a bioactive lipid mediator involved in diverse cellular processes including cell migration, proliferation, apoptosis, angiogenesis, and tumorigenesis. SK2 is predominantly localized in the nucleus but can be exported to the cytoplasm. It is regulated by phosphorylation at specific residues. SK2 is implicated in several diseases, including cancer and COPD.
