Target intelligence / Profile preview
The spike glycoprotein (S protein) is a trimeric, highly glycosylated surface protein of SARS-CoV-2 that mediates viral entry into host cells. The D614G variant refers to a specific mutation in which the amino acid aspartic acid (D) at position 614 is replaced by glycine (G). This mutation increases infectivity and transmissibility, becoming globally dominant during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Neutralizing antibodies bind to the spike protein and prevent its interaction with ACE2, thus blocking viral entry.
