Overview

The receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the S1 subunit of the coronavirus spike glycoprotein is responsible for binding to the ACE2 receptor on host cells, initiating viral entry. It is a major target for neutralizing antibodies and vaccines. The RBD's conformation switches between "up" (accessible) and "down" (hidden) states to modulate receptor binding.
