The receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the S1 subunit of the coronavirus spike glycoprotein is responsible for binding to the ACE2 receptor on host cells, initiating viral entry. It is a major target for neutralizing antibodies and vaccines. The RBD's conformation switches between "up" (accessible) and "down" (hidden) states to modulate receptor binding. Mutations within the RBD can affect binding affinity, antibody evasion, and viral infectivity.
