The spinal column (also called the vertebral column, spine, or backbone) is the segmented bony structure forming the core part of the axial skeleton in vertebrates. In humans, it consists of 33 vertebrae grouped into cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, and coccygeal regions. Its main functions include structural support for the body, protection of the spinal cord, facilitation of movement, and shock absorption. It is composed of bones (vertebrae), cartilage (intervertebral discs), joints, ligaments, and nerve tissue, and serves as an anchor for muscles and as a conduit for spinal nerve roots. Disorders affecting the spinal column include degenerative, traumatic, congenital, and inflammatory diseases, though the structure itself is not a molecular target for drugs or biologics.
