Overview

Spinal motor neurons are specialized neuronal cells located in the ventral horn of the spinal cord that form the final common pathway for motor control[1][3]. They are part of the lower motor neuron system and are responsible for transmitting signals from the central nervous system directly to skeletal muscles in the periphery[1][3]. These neurons use acetylcholine as their neurotransmitter and can be classified into several subtypes including alpha, beta, and gamma motor neurons based on the types of muscle fibers they innervate[1]. Alpha motor neurons innervate extrafusal muscle fibers and are the primary drivers of skeletal muscle contraction, while gamma motor neurons innervate muscle spindles and regulate muscle sensitivity[1]. Spinal motor neurons are organized into anatomical groups called motor pools, where each pool connects to a specific muscle target[3]. They are organized into distinct motor columns along the spinal cord including the median motor column, lateral motor column, hypaxial motor column, and preganglionic column[3]. These neurons represent the longest known cell type, with axons that can extend several meters in mammals[3]. Diseases affecting spinal motor neurons, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and spinal muscular atrophy, are rapidly debilitating because these cells form an irreplaceable component of the motor circuit with no alternative pathways available[3].
