Overview

A spinal polysynaptic reflex is a reflex action mediated by the spinal cord involving multiple synapses and interneurons between sensory and motor neurons. It serves as a protective mechanism, enabling rapid and coordinated responses to potentially harmful stimuli. Examples include the withdrawal reflex and the crossed extensor reflex. Unlike monosynaptic reflexes, polysynaptic reflexes can be modulated by higher brain centers.
