Overview

Spinal polysynaptic reflexes are rapid, involuntary motor responses to stimuli that involve multiple synapses within the spinal cord. These reflexes involve at least three types of neurons: sensory (afferent), interneurons, and motor (efferent) neurons. The presence of one or more interneurons allows for integration and modulation of the response. These reflexes serve as protective mechanisms by enabling quick withdrawal from harmful stimuli, allow for complex coordination between different muscle groups, and play an important role in locomotion and postural adjustments.
