Overview

Spindle and centriole-associated protein 1 (SPICE1) is a human protein encoded by the SPICE1 gene, also known as CCDC52. SPICE1 localizes to spindle microtubules during mitosis and to centrioles throughout the cell cycle. It acts as a critical regulator for centriole duplication, proper formation of bipolar mitotic spindles, and chromosome alignment during cell division. SPICE1 depletion leads to impaired centriole duplication, disrupted spindle architecture, spindle pole integrity defects, and chromosome misalignment, which can result in mitotic errors and genomic instability. Mutations in SPICE1 have been associated with developmental disorders such as primary autosomal recessive microcephaly and juvenile glaucoma. Currently, SPICE1 is not established as a direct therapeutic target, has no known interacting drugs, and is not used as a biomarker.
