Overview

The spleen is a secondary lymphoid organ situated in the upper left abdomen, divided into red pulp and white pulp regions, with an intervening marginal zone. The white pulp is rich in immune cells (B and T lymphocytes, dendritic cells); the red pulp filters blood, removing aged erythrocytes and pathogens. The spleen plays vital roles in the immune response, blood filtration, hematopoiesis during development, reservoir functions, and is involved in a number of disease processes such as infection, inflammation, and hematologic malignancies[1][2][3]. "Spleen tissue" itself is not a molecular target, but many components within it (such as receptors, cell surface proteins, and immune signaling molecules) serve as drug targets in immunology and hematology[1][2][3]. For any downstream data extraction, a more specific target (such as "CD4 molecule in spleen T cells" or "FDC in splenic germinal centers") should be used, rather than the whole organ or tissue.
