Spleen tonic

Spleen tonic is a therapeutic category in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda rather than a specific molecular target, receptor, or enzyme [1, 2]. In these traditional systems, the 'Spleen' represents a functional network responsible for digestion, nutrient absorption, and the distribution of energy (Qi) and blood [2, 17]. Spleen tonics consist of individual herbs or complex formulations, such as Panax ginseng, Astragalus membranaceus, and Atractylodes macrocephala, which are used to treat 'Spleen Qi deficiency'—a state characterized by fatigue, poor appetite, and digestive weakness [3, 11, 17]. While not a single molecule, modern research indicates that the constituents of these tonics interact with various biological pathways, including the modulation of gut microbiota, activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), and regulation of the TLR4/MyD88 inflammatory pathway [8, 10, 12]. Consequently, 'Spleen tonic' serves as a holistic pharmacological concept aimed at restoring metabolic and immunological homeostasis rather than acting on a single receptor [13, 16].
