Overview

Splenic tissue constitutes the functional components of the spleen, the largest lymphoid organ in the human body. It is organized into two distinct regions: the red pulp, which filters the blood to remove senescent erythrocytes and recycle iron, and the white pulp, which facilitates adaptive immune responses by housing T and B lymphocytes (StatPearls, 2023). While splenic tissue is the site of action for many immunomodulatory and hematologic drugs, it is an anatomical structure rather than a specific molecular target like a receptor or enzyme. Pathological conditions such as splenomegaly or hypersplenism often necessitate systemic treatments or surgical intervention (NIH, 2024). Consequently, Splenic tissue is considered an incorrect designation for a therapeutic target in a molecular context, as drug discovery typically focuses on specific proteins or pathways within the tissue rather than the organ as a whole.
