Overview

Splicing regulatory glutamic acid and lysine rich protein 1 (SREK1) is a member of the serine/arginine-rich (SR) protein family that contains RNA recognition motifs and plays a key role in the regulation of alternative splicing by modulating the activity of other SR proteins. The protein inhibits the splicing activity of specific splice factors such as SFRS1, SFRS2, and SFRS6, while augmenting splicing by SFRS3. SREK1 is predicted to have nucleic acid binding and nucleotide binding activity, be localized to the nucleus and nucleoplasm, and act orthologously in humans, zebrafish, and other species. Although the gene is fundamental for post-transcriptional modification, it is not currently considered a therapeutic drug target nor associated with prominent disease mechanisms.
