Overview

SPNS lysolipid transporter 3 (SPNS3) is a predicted transmembrane protein belonging to the major facilitator superfamily (MFS), specifically within the spinster-like group of solute carrier transporters[2][5][7]. The protein is thought to enable transmembrane lysolipid and sphingolipid transport, including sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), although proof of direct functional activity in human cells is not yet robustly established[2][5][6]. It is a paralog of the better-studied SPNS2, which exports S1P and is vital for immune, vascular, and neural signaling; SPNS3 may serve overlapping or yet-unknown lipid transport roles. SPNS3 is expressed as a membrane protein, but to date, no direct involvement in human disease or as a therapeutic target has been described. It is used by researchers mainly in comparative and evolutionary studies of the spinster family of lipid transporters[4][5][6].
