SPON1 antisense RNA 1 (SPON1-AS1, also called RP11-21 or L19.1) is a human long noncoding RNA transcribed from the antisense strand of the SPON1 locus. Like other antisense RNAs, it is presumed to have a potential role in the post-transcriptional regulation of the sense gene (SPON1), but there are currently no peer-reviewed publications elucidating its function, interacting partners, or potential disease associations. There is no current evidence that SPON1-AS1 serves as a drug target, a biomarker, or is implicated in a specific pathogenic process. Its molecular classification is that of a long noncoding antisense RNA. This distinguishes it fundamentally from druggable protein-coding molecular targets such as receptors, enzymes, or ion channels.
