Squalene monooxygenase (SM), also known as squalene epoxidase or SQLE, is a key enzyme in the cholesterol biosynthesis pathway. It catalyzes the stereospecific oxidation of squalene to (S)-2,3-epoxysqualene, representing a rate-limiting step in sterol and steroid biosynthesis. This reaction is essential for the production of cholesterol and other sterols in eukaryotic cells. SM is a therapeutic target for hypercholesterolemia, cancer, and fungal infections. The enzyme is regulated by cholesterol levels and squalene.
