SRY-box 2 pseudogene

Molecular classification
Pseudogene, Non-coding RNA
01

Overview

The SRY-box 2 pseudogene is a non-protein-coding sequence homologous to the SOX2 gene, a key pluripotency and neural development transcription factor. As a pseudogene, ENSG00000237586 does not encode a functional SOX2 protein. However, pseudogenes can sometimes be transcribed into RNA, and their transcripts may contribute to the regulation of their parent gene or other molecular processes, particularly by acting as competing endogenous RNAs or through modulation of regulatory factors at the RNA level. Pseudogene expression, including SOX2 pseudogene expression, has gained interest as a biomarker in cancer and may reflect disease state or subtype, but the pseudogene itself is not a therapeutic target and does not have a direct clinical mechanism of action[2][4]. This target does not represent an active protein or classical druggable entity; it is primarily of interest for molecular biology or biomarker research.

Biological functions

Regulation of gene expression (through possible RNA-level mechanisms such as acting as competing endogenous RNAs or decoys for regulatory factors[2][4])
03

Disease associations

Cancer (pseudogenes, including those related to SOX2, have been implicated in cancer as biomarkers or regulators through RNA-mediated mechanisms[2])Other (possible, but not direct, regulatory roles in disease via RNA-based mechanisms[2][4])
04

Biomarkers

Pseudogene expression profiles, including SOX2-related pseudogenes, can be used as biomarkers in cancer for diagnosis, prognosis, or subtype classification[2]
