Overview

The SRY-box 30 pseudogene (also known as SOX30P) is a non-protein-coding genomic element related to the SRY-box 30 (SOX30) gene. Whereas the functional SOX30 gene encodes a transcription factor critical for male germ-cell meiosis and differentiation[1], its pseudogene counterpart typically does not produce a functional protein. Pseudogenes may have regulatory roles at the RNA level, such as acting as "miRNA sponges" or modulating the stability of related mRNAs[2], but specific functions for the SRY-box 30 pseudogene have not been described. Unlike the canonical SOX30, this pseudogene is not an established therapeutic target, and should not be confused with the protein-coding gene. Key distinction: The functional SRY-box 30 (SOX30) is a transcription factor essential for spermatogenesis in the testis[1], but the SRY-box 30 pseudogene (ENSG00000253798) is a non-functional paralog, with no evidence of being a drug target or a biomarker.

Disease associations

Potential, but uncharacterized, impact on gene regulation and disease, as some pseudogenes can act in cancer and other diseases through RNA-mediated mechanismsNo established direct disease association for this specific pseudogene
