SRY-box transcription factor 2 (SOX2) is a nuclear transcription factor that plays a critical role in stem cell biology and mammalian development. It is essential for maintaining the self-renewal and pluripotency of undifferentiated embryonic stem cells, as well as the maintenance of neural stem cells. SOX2 belongs to the SOX (SRY-related HMG-box) family of transcription factors, which are characterized by a highly conserved DNA-binding domain known as the HMG (High-Mobility Group) box.
